Did you know PUC is now mandatory for the renewal of motor insurance?
As per the new guidelines released by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), it is mandatory for all insurance companies to check for valid pollution under control (PUC) certificate at the time of motor insurance renewal. If the owner has not got a PUC for their vehicle, they will not be able to renew their motor insurance policy.
Hence, people will by default have to get their vehicle’s PUC done in order to save themselves against legal obligations. Insurance experts believe that this new law will help keep pollution levels in check and ensure that motorist get their PUC done on time.
What does the new
law state?
The new law regulated by the IRDAI has
made it mandatory for a vehicle owner to have a valid PUC certificate of their
vehicles for the renewal of motor insurance. The law asks insurance companies
to not provide with motor insurance renewals to vehicles without a legitimate
PUC certificate. Additionally, IRDAI’s circular also states that insurance
providers should not compensate for any claims on vehicles that do not have an
authentic PUC document during the accident. This is why, insurance companies
check whether the vehicles have a PUC certificate during the renewal of motor
insurance policy. The introduction of this law has also increased the penalty
charges of not having a PUC certificate of your vehicle.
What is a PUC certificate?
A PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate indicates whether your vehicle’s emission levels are within the permissible limits or not. Sure, when your car or bike is new, its engine will run efficiently and keep the emission levels in check. However, as the vehicle gets older, engine performance can start to deteriorate, resulting in higher emission levels. That’s why motorist need to get a PUC test done at regular intervals of time to ensure their vehicle is not harming the environment.
Which vehicles are exempted from this rule?
You are not required to get a PUC done for vehicles that run on
electricity. You can renew your motor insurance policy without a PUC
certificate. Other than electric vehicles, brand new vehicles are also exempted
from this rule only for the first year of their usage. After one year
anniversary of your vehicle, you will have to get a PUC done for the renewal of
motor insurance of your car or
bike.
Where can you get a PUC certificate?
You can get the PUCC for your vehicle done from an authorized
emissions testing center. You can find these at gas stations, near puncture
repair shops and on the service roads of the highways. The test can be
completed in a matter or minutes and usually has a very minimal fees as well.
